Futurama, the animated sci-fi comedy created by Simpsons creator Matt Groening, is gearing up for its season finale. As TV Guide reports, this season’s upcoming finale will feature the show being presented in three different animation styles, including anime.
The writers of the show weren’t sure if Comedy Central was planning to sign on for another season after the current one ends. As a result, this season’s finale was created as a series finale, in case it was the last one and the show wasn’t renewed.
As it turns out, Comedy Central did order 26 more episodes, but this season finale will still air.
As Futurama executive producer David X. Cohen says in the TV Guide piece,
“The idea is that it’sFuturama reincarnated in three different animation styles,” says executive producer David X. Cohen. “One is in [Max] Fleischer black-and-white style, one in a 1980s video-game style and one in a Japanese anime style. We’re going to show the Japanese anime Futurama at Comic-Con. It’s custom-made for Comic-Con.” In the hilarious segment, “Action Delivery Force,” the cast is reimagined as a not-quite-heroic team inspired by classic Japanese imports like Voltron and Battle of the Planets. “We’re going to go out in style,” Cohen says. “And then we’ll be back next year.”
Anime-style Futurama is sure to be a smash hit with attendees of Comic-Con.
The Futurama panel is set for Comic-Con on Saturday, July 23 at 12:15 pm, if you happen to be going down to San Diego for the weekend’s festivities.
