According to Venture Beat, Microsoft’s Kinect has been a substantial disappointment in its first year of availability in Japan.
To date, the device has only sold roughly 114,000 units in the country, with sales dropping dramatically in the past few months.
Tony Key, VP of sales and marketing at Ubisoft, is quoted in the article as saying the following about the majority of Kinect’s sales taking place in its first two months of release: It’s not healthy to just sell in the holiday, or 90 percent of your units in the holidays. We would really like to see them [Microsoft] have some major launches during the non-holiday part of the year. That will help keep the visibility of the machine high and enable better catalog sales throughout the year.
As has been heavily discussed lately, the state of the gaming industry in Japan is in a difficult situation, with Wii’s continued struggles and now the Kinect’s failure to really catch on in the country.
What do you think? is thereany hope for the future of the Kinect in Japan?
