Should Japan commercialize Buddhism for Christmas?

Christmas is a few days away, so all sorts of websites are turning out their Holiday-themed columns, posts and content.

The Huffington Post recently ran this entry by Amy Chavez, author of Japan, Funny Side Up. In addition to the requisite “whoa, they eat Kentucky Fried Chicken for Christmas!!!” comments, she briefly touches on the Japanese traditions regarding Christmas, adding a few mildly humorous anecdotes here and there: Christmas, with its sparkly, over-glitzed trees, a cherry-cheeked Santa Claus and the ritual of gift-giving is irresistible to the Japanese who have taken to celebrating Christmas on a superficial level. You can hardly blame them for wanting to participate in such an entertaining religion.

toward the end of the piece, Chavez suggests that Japan commercialize Buddhism for Christmas, as she says it would provide a much-needed boost to the Japanese economy.

It’s a lighthearted little article, but worth your time if you’re into that sort of thing.
