OMG, it’s already February 3rd today – Setsubun!

Do you know what day is Setsubun? Setsubun is the day before the beginning of spring according to the lunisolar calendar. Tonight, we open the doors of our houses and drive the demons (ONI i.e. bad luck) out of our homes and gardens by throwing handfuls of dried soy beans and shouting, “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi! (Demons out! Good luck in!)” We also eat Eho maki (Lucky direction roll sushi). Eho maki is a big rolled sushi of 7 lucky ingredients. We eat without pause or chatter while facing the Eho. (Eho is the direction of the god of fortune and happiness and she changes her direction every year. It’s the north-northwest of this year’s lucky direction).
These days, we have Eho maki roll cakes based on the classic sushi rolls! Therefore, I collected pictures of different Eho Maki from hotels, supermarkets, coveience stores, and department stores. Now, let’s have a Big bite toward the north-northwest of this year’s lucky direction!

I am going to get a Big Roll Sushi from Jinpachi ( This is my favorite sushi restaurant in LA. 8711 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069 Phone:310- 358-9134) tonight! You can ask to make your local sushi restaurants make a big roll sushi or pick up from some Japanese markets like Nijiya Market or Mitsuwa. Please do not forget that you eat the whole roll without pause or chat. Please enjoy!
