According to this article, Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, the feature-film version based on the hugely successful Japanese anime Neon Genesis Evangelion is screening in some areas now and will probably be hitting US cinemas soon….the film’s Wikipedia page lists November 10, 2009 as a possible US release date.
The film is the first in a four-part series that is a re-imagining/remake of the original anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, which was created and directed by Hideaki Anno around 1995.
This new film version screened a bit over the past year at some conventions and in some theaters scattered throughout the US, but no wide release has happened yet.
There have also been talks about a live-action film of Neon Genesis Evangelion that has been in limbo since around 2003, and at this point it seems to be anybody’s guess if and when the film will ever be completed or released. Supposedly, as of 2009[update], the project is considered to be in “development hell“, as a director has yet to become available or announced officially. So who knows if this will ever happen.
However, the animated Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone looks like it’s on track to coming out in the US soon….the second part of the series, Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance was released in Japan this June and was very successful at the box office, raking in 510 million yen in its first two days of its release.
I guess we’ll just have to see what happens with the Evangelion films in the US, and whether or not the live-action version EVER materializes….there are undoubtedly a large number of people throughout the world who are conceivably looking forward to these movies, so it’ll be interesting to see if and when they become a reality.
In the meantime, here’s the trailer for Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone…
