Cowboy Bebop, the 1998 anime series directed by Shinichirō Watanabe and written by Keiko Nobumoto, will apparently be hitting the big screen in a live-action film sometime in 2011. There was an article written about this in Variety back in January, check it out here.
Set in futuristic 2071, Cowboy Bebop tells the story of a team of bounty hunters, called “cowboys”, who travel around the solar system tracking down bad guys, led by Jet Black and Spike Spiegel. The anime was a great success when it was released a decade or so ago, and its popularity led to a feature film in 2001 that was also well-received. I remember watching it on Cartoon Network back around that time, as well, which added to its popularity in the US.
As with any big-budget theatrical version of an anime, I’m sure some people are really hoping this Cowboy Bebop re-telling does justice to the original series. Keanu Reeves seems like an interesting choice to play Spike Spiegel, since Keanu is one of those actors who people either love or hate, because of the way he delivers lines and his overall acting style. When the film is released, it’s safe to assume there will be some people who love his performance and some who criticize it, simply because he’s Keanu.
Given Cowboy Bebop’s setting, mostly in Mars in 2071 after life on Earth was eradicated, it is probably safe to assume that this live-action version will have a lot of special effects, since it is such a dramatic, futuristic setting for the film.
There isn’t really a whole lot of other information about this upcoming film, since it’s still two years away and they haven’t even begun filming yet, but stay tuned. If more information comes out we’ll be sure to post about it here. What we know now is that Keanu is signed on to play Spiegel, and that Watanabe and series writer Keiko Nobumoto are involved in the production, so concerned fans can maybe rest easier knowing that the film will be carried out by the people who were responsible for the anime series.
Any other information, though, we will still have to wait for as the days go by.
