Kobitozukan: The Seedy Underbelly of Japanese Mascot-dom

Many of you are familiar with Japanese mascots and their enormous cute factor, such as Pon de Lion and his Sweet Friends of Mister Donut or the entire Hello Kitty brand of Sanrio and while mascots on one end of the cute spectrum exist, there, of course, has to be mascots on the opposite end to create balance. Once you see the mascots, though, you’ll wish that balance was never established.

Here's some cute mascots to ease the introduction of the Kobitozukan.

Have the (dis)pleasure of meeting the “Kobitozukan” (こびとづかん).

Apparently, they're supposed to be fairies... This one is Kakure-momojiri.

This one is Kakure-momojiri.
AmeBoushi
This guy is AmeBoushi or Candy Hat.
Hotokeakabane
This guy is Hotokeakabane and he can fly. Yes.
Shibori-oochichi
By far the creepiest one, Shibori-oochichi. His head is a teat.

I have no idea what they’re supposed to be. They’re all available at Sunkus Conbini and are part of their buy two snacks and get clear file with the mascots on them. This isn’t a small thing specific to one convenience store in Japan, this is an entire franchise. Who thought it was a good idea to base mascots on characters reminiscent of old German fairy tales that were meant to scare kids? Who, I ask! There are figurines, post cards, an anime, and key chains and even a camera app. It’s not a half-hearted attempt at a franchise; it’s a full-fledged thing and demands respect through fear and nightmares.

I understand corporations have lost touch with their consumer base but who honestly thought this was a good idea as a franchise for anything other than its terrifying novelty?

Look forward to our review on the  Kobitozukan Peach Candy.
