Are Pico Taro and Producer Kosaka the Same Person?
With his beard drawn with permanent marker, punch perm, sunglasses, and leopard pattern outfit, Pico Taro obviously looks fishy. Pico Taro, who is 53-years-old, is the most famous Japanese singer song writer. In his music video for his song, Pen Pineapple Apple Pen, he dances to picopico sound similar to those found in 1980’s video games. With this music video, he became an astounding global hit on via the internet.
“To be honest, I do not quite understand it myself, but according to Mr. Kosaka, first of all, the “papipupepo” plosive sounds, like People, Post, Pineapple, Pants, are pleasant and catchy. And it should be in English. Finally doing idiotic things with all of your heart. I think these three things are behind the success of my song.”
As such, Pico Taro seriously analyzed the reason of his huge success with the words of a comedian and “producer” of the same entertainment office, Kosaka Daimao (43).
“I was not conscious of the world at all, but I am truly surprised that I was accepted overseas by so many people.”
Overseas media such as BBC have reported that Pico Tao and Producer Kosaka are the same person.
There are similar theories among comedians in Japan.
Are they really different people?
Pico Taro has repeatedly stated, “We have a producer and artist relationship. We are different people. I can not say fried rice is ramen.”
However, if we follow the roots of Kosaka, there is a fact that overlaps with the profile of Pico Taro.
Kosaka Daimao is from Aomori Prefecture. In 1998, he was a part of a comedy group, Sokonuke AIR-LINE, and he released pictures of himself playing a synthesizer in a weekly magazine.
He said he was into the rock band The Prodigy in the early 1990’s. He said, “I want to fuse our comedy and techno successfully. I am going to pursue new entertainment and abandon comedy.” (FLASH July 7, 1998 issue).
Now, Pico Taro is riding the crest of a great wave and has released a new song on October 6! The song is called NEO SUNGLASSES.
Within one month of its release, the song has exceeded 11 million views already.
He uses his trademark sunglasses and repeatedly calls out “dark” and “bright” in the video, singing to a unique rhythm like PPAP.
The biggest difference from PPAP, is that the song is in Japanese, not English.
We believe that it is not an exaggeration to say that Pico Taro succeeded overseas because PPAP was in English, but maybe Pico Taro is not going to target the world anymore?
