X Japan, Otoboke Beaver Confirmed To Play Coachella 2018
Though recent lineups have been criticized as popularized and light on rock acts, Coachella is becoming more welcoming towards Asian artists. Last year, Korean Hip-Hop group Epik High has been included in Coachella’s 2017 lineup. This year, one of the most influential Visual-Kei/Heavy Metal band X Japan and girl punk band Otoboke Beaver are given the tickets to the Indio dessert party.
X Japan had been actively performing a series of shows worldwide back in 2015, but had to postpone the release of long-due new album owing to frequent health conditions with multiple members. X Japan recently performed at the year-end Kohaku Uta Gassen and the public saw Yoshiki played drums again for the first time since his neck surgery 8 years ago.
Named after a love hotel, Otoboke Beaver has always had an oddball attitude towards life. The band released their second EP “Love Is Short” last March and made their first USA appearance at SXSW. Their fuzzy energetic tracks send strong message of their awakening of gender roles and social issues in an offhand way.
Though Coachella has made attempt on summoning Asian bands to weaken their previous old-school predominantly white image, the tiny font for a 35-year-old stadium-level band is still almost ridiculous. However considering that the festival is now widely fulminated for its narrow-minded act selection, the fact that X Japan’s name is buried under a bunch of DJs should not be left open-mouthed.
Both bands will be playing on the second day of the festival on April 14th and 21st. Check out the full line up below:
