Japanese rock band ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION recently released the artwork and tracklist of their upcoming new album “Hometown”, which is due December 5th this year. The album artwork is again done by famous art illustrator, Yusuke Nakamura. The band also elaborated a number of collaborators, of which Rivers Cuomo, the frontman of legendary power pop band Weezer is the most discussed one.
ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION is a four piece alternative rock band, which is formed in 1996. Influenced heavily by the then britpop scene in England, represented by bands like Oasis and Supergrass, as well as the American indie trend led by Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, Pavement, etc, the band displayed a rather mixed music style, balancing elements like power-pop, grunge, and hardcore. The band started off singing in English while they were still in college, but quickly switched to Japanese to attract more local audiences. Despite often being headliners of domestic music festivals, most foreign fans knew the band through a few opening songs for notable animes, such as Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach and Naruto.
Having quoted Weezer as one of their major influences in multiple occasions, ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION not only became acquaint with the whole band as they started organizing an annual festival that invites international musicians, including Weezer, but also got a chance to do a cover of Weezer’s “Only In Dreams” with Matt Sharp, the bassist of Weezer 5 years ago, Now, Rivers Cuomo himself co-wrote two songs, “Clockwork” and “Dancing Girl”, in ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION’s new album. How exciting!
