May 26, 2019. HYDE performed the final show of his U.S. tour in front of a sold-out crowd at 1720 in Los Angeles.
It’s been almost a year and a half since HYDE last performed in Los Angeles. A long line formed around the venue with exhilarated fans, even under the pouring rain. But even the Los Angeles weather seemed to welcome HYDE. The hard rain eventually stopped, and a rainbow formed over the venue.
HYDE restarted his solo career early last year. This was his first U.S. tour since he resumed solo activities. His new music is quite different from his past music, incorporating the “dark” aspects of American-styled metal.
His new look seemed to match this latest style of music. He appeared on stage with a mask and smeared lipstick, combining the ominousness of the Phantom of the Opera and the Joker. His eyes shined as he looked across the dimly lit venue.
The show knocked off with “FAKE DIVINE.” This powerful song, released as a single last October, will be included in his upcoming album “anti” as well.
During the following “AFTER LIGHT,” the audience enjoyed a call-and-response moment with HYDE. Although streaming of the new album just recently started a few weeks ago, fans were already prepared for their part in this song.
3The third song was “INSIDE OF ME,” a song released under his previous act, VAMPS. With a megaphone in hand, HYDE stared straight forward into the audience. He had a determined look, a look showing that he is ready to compete in the American music industry.
A soft piano melody changed the atmosphere of the venue. The following song was “ZIPANG,” a ballad song that sings about the beauty of the “good old days” of Japan.
Following were more songs from his newest album, such as “WHO’S GONNA SAVE US” and “LION.” Near the end, HYDE performed “MIDNIGHT CELEBRATION II,” which is a re-recording of a song released in 2003. This song, greatly popular by many of his fans, has continued to bring great excitement during concerts for over a decade.
His closing song was a cover of Duran Duran’s “ORDINARY WORLD.”
“But I won’t cry for yesterday”
“I will learn to survive”
The lyrics of the song seem almost analogous to HYDE himself, as he looks forward to moving on with his solo career without dwelling in the past.
“We’ll see you in the fall!” With those words, HYDE bid his farewells and closed off his final show of the U.S. tour.
HYDE continues to create new music, never stopping. We are excited to see what he will bring to Los Angeles next time we see him!
