David Lynch, the visionary experimental filmmaker known for confusing and captivating films such as Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Drive, also directed some pretty weird coffee commercials for Japan in the early 1990s.

The ads were based on his cult TV drama Twin Peaks, which was known for its quirkiness and extremely odd atmospherics (two things that have gone on to define Lynch’s style as a filmmaker). Each ad featured Twin Peaks’ eccentric main character, Special Agent Dale Cooper, as he helps a Japanese man track down his wife.
