The World Cup may be over, but that doesn’t mean you won’t hear anything about it until four years from now. Quite the opposite, in fact.
FIFA’s head honchos are now on their two-month trip around the globe to find a suitor for the 2022 World Cup, and Japan is trying really hard to win the competition. As this article describes, the FIFA kings have given the “thumbs-up” to the existing soccer stadium in Saitama, a city outside of Tokyo, in hopes of housing the Cup in 2022. The execs toured the facility, and were impressed with what they saw.
Saitama Stadium hosted the 2002 World Cup, when Japan split hosting duties with South Korea, and has been very popular since then.
The FIFA suits also listened to Japan’s pitch for hosting duties, which includes a plan to treat football fans worldwide to live three-dimensional broadcasts of matches.
With the current boom in 3D televisions and people increasingly wanting more and more out of their live broadcasts, live 3D World Cup games would be a great selling point, and Japan is taking advantage of that.
The FIFA dudes still have to visit a bunch of other countries in the next two months before making their decision on December 2, but Japan is off to a great start if they want to be the center of the world’s attention for a few months in 2022.
