Hatsune Miku Designer Creates Characters for Sake

This past July, the designer of Hatsune Miku, KEI, was contracted to create characters for Japanese convenience store chain, Lawson. The characters were created to promote two alcoholic drinks, plum and yuzu wine and were named Meu (the one in the yukata) and Yurisu (the one in the idol outfit). The first batch is scheduled to release August 6th through September 5th. The characters were so successful that KEI was contracted to create a second edition for the convenience store chain. This batch is scheduled to release right after the first edition stops (September 5th through October 10th).

The drinks have been brewed by Nakano Sake Brewery and are priced at 1,680 yen or around 16 dollars USD a bottle. It’s not hard to deduce that most people buying the drinks are buying them for Meu and Yurisu but the questions remains on whether or not they taste good. Sadly, those of us (that are of age, underage drinking isn’t promoted here) outside of Japan might have a hard time finding a way to import them but if you happen to be in Japan, why not pick up a bottle just to try it?

I’m going to go off-topic for a bit to let you take into consideration what this means for characters created by KEI. What if, hypothetically, Miku had to deal with Meu and Yurisu’s drinking problem and them “hurting” the “family image”? What if, at family gatherings, there is always a brawl between Miku and the sake twins and it’s tearing the hypothetical family apart?! Meu might be really good at pretending to be cute but I bet she can throw a punch. And don’t get me started on Yurisu, she’s probably the leader of an all-girl biker gang dressed as idols! Man, this situation, that I’ve made up, is messed up.
