Today is March 3rd! In Japan, March 3rd has been known as the Girls’ Day since the Heian period. Hinamatsuri is to pray for a young girl’s growth and happiness.  To celebrate this festival, households with girls will display a set of ornamented dolls (hina-ningyou) on platforms covered with red carpet.  The ornamented dolls represent the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians.

This year in Katsuura (a town in Chiba prefecture), there was over 25,000 dolls decorated around the town and at the Tomisaki Shrine there was 1,200 Hina dolls displayed on 60 steps of stone stairway. Picture below
