We had the honor of doing a special featured interview with Nyalra, the planner and scenario writer behind NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE! During Anime Expo 2026, we discussed his journey into otaku culture, the success of NSO, and his upcoming visual novel, Sister Other Paranoia.

Kawaii Kakkoii Sugoi (KKS): Hi, how are you? We’re Kawaii Kakkoii Sugoi. How’s your day been?
Nyalra: I’m very happy to see so many people here who are fans of Japanese media.

KKS: Is this your first time in America?
Nyalra: It’s my second time. My first time was in Seattle, but this is my first time in Los Angeles.

KKS: And how’s LA been for you?
Nyalra: The weather is perfect here.

KKS: Could you introduce yourself to our readers who might not know who you are?
Nyalra: I’m the creator of NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE (known as NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD, or NSO for short, in the West), and the creator of Sister Other Paranoia, a visual novel that will be coming out soon.

KKS: How did you come to immerse yourself in otaku culture, and how did that develop into the person you are today?
Nyalra: I watched lots of anime and played video games instead of going to school. I played Sega Saturn and a lot of bishojo games.

KKS: Which Sega Saturn game was your favorite?
Nyalra: YU-NO. (A visual novel released in 1996.)

KKS: What became your inspiration or motivation for developing NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD?
Nyalra: When creating NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD, we wanted to create a visual-type game that was a little more interactive. It has more gameplay elements, but, of course, we still loved the visual novel text format, which also inspired us to make Sister Other Paranoia.

KKS: When NSO became a breakout hit, what was your reaction?
Nyalra: I saw a lot of different types of comments, not just positive ones, but also not very happy ones. That also inspired our next game, Sister Other Paranoia.

KKS: The music in NSO harkens back to the ’90s MIDI style of galge (gal game). I’m a big fan of Aiobahn’s music. How did you two meet, and what was the idea you envisioned for NSO?
Nyalra: We’d been friends for a while before the development of NSO. For the music, I was a big fan of YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra), especially “Halloween.” I also really like the music from Namco games, so I wanted to have that kind of sound as well.

KKS: Unlike NSO, which had a lot of interactive elements and time management, SOP is touted as a classic visual novel. To follow up a standout hit like that, has it gotten easier or harder this time?
Nyalra: I didn’t feel much pressure making SOP because the success of NSO allowed me to make a game that I really wanted to make and explore what I wanted to do right now.

KKS: In addition to SOP, you mentioned in another interview that there was another game you’re working on with the original NSO team. Is there anything you could also share about that?
Nyalra: The focus and theme are religion, and it will be more interactive, like Needy.

KKS: Our media outlet is called Kawaii Kakkoii Sugoi. What do the words “kawaii” (cute), “kakkoii” (cool), and “sugoi” (awesome) mean to you? You can answer with one word or all three.
Nyalra: Kawaii is a word that is central to all this. It’s a word with no hostility or hard feelings toward the other person. It’s a very nice word.

KKS: Any closing comments you’d like to share?
Nyalra: Sister Other Paranoia has a darker side and explores darker themes like isolation and paranoia. So it’s not necessarily going to be a happy game, but if it can reach people who happen to like the game’s characters, I hope I can give them a little hope.
