With its 4-1 victory over Hawaii in the Championship game, Japan won the Little League World Series on Sunday.
The Japanese team, a solid unit with stellar pitching and defense, held the kids from Hawaii to only a few singles and one run, easily dispatching them for the title.
This recap from Yahoo! Sports tells the story, as The All-Star team from Tokyo’s Edogawa Minami Little League became the first international squad to take the crown since Curacao in 2004. A team from Tokyo’s Musashi-Fuchu league was the last winner from Japan, the previous year.
Obviously, Japan is rife with quality ballplayers, as many great players from the country are in Major League Baseball, including Hideki Matsui, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Hideki Okajima, among others. Surely the kids on the Japan national Little League squad have hopes of one day making the Majors, and judging by their domination of the Little League World Series this year, that doesn’t seem like too far-fetched of a goal.
