In the nearly two weeks since the triple disasters to hit Japan–the Great Tohoku Earthquake, and subsequent tsunami and nuclear disaster, people and organizations throughout Japan and abroad have been mobilizing to help in relief efforts. The situation continues to change and evolve, but the overall tenor is slowly shifting from crisis management, to recovery.

There have been a notable number of disruptions to concerts and events scheduled through March–but this is not surprising given the rolling blackouts in the northern areas of Honshu, and general stability issues with the power grid and supply lines.  There are still difficulties in getting much-needed food and fuel supplies into the damage-stricken northeast coastal areas, but even northwest coastal areas like Tsuruoka are experiencing disruptions because of the current strain on resources.

People are returning to the streets of Tokyo after days of being huddled indoors over concern of radioactive fallout from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility, if not simply being able to commute, given the large-scale disruptions to rail service that occurred following the earthquake. A welcome return to the daily routine is underway.

As the situation at the damaged nuclear plant appears to be stabilizing, the focus is shifting to addressing the long-term effects of the unprecendented catastrophe–particularly in regard to food and water contamination. Trace levels of contaminates from the facility have been detected in Tokyo”s water supply, although this situation will eventually come to pass, according to this recent piece posted at NPR. There is great concern for the area immediate to the plant, and there will no doubt be a concerted effort in the international community to analyze what went wrong, and to quantify the actual effects on the enviroment and people living near the plant. Needless to say, the health of the brave plant workers and public service personel who intervened in the crisis is also of grave concern.

Relief efforts on the northeast coast are underway, with numerous NGOs participating, bolstered by an incredible worldwide response in the form of charitable online pokies donations. The Japanese entertainment industry has been contributing in big ways as well. Johnny and Associates cancelled their March concerts in favor of using their trucks to deliver relief supplies, and are exploring means to offer low power-consumption concerts to disaster-stricken areas. Artists like Beat Takeshi, Namie Amuro, and AKB48 have contributed large sums to relief efforts. Support has come from across the Sea of Japan online casino from artists like Kara in Korea, and numerous benefit events were held in Los Angeles, New York, and elsewhere over the last week, with more on the way.

Japan”s recovery is going to take time, and will involve not only the tangible reconstruction–rebuilding homes and businesses that were destroyed–but also regaining the confidence of Japan as a nation. The scope and severity of the disasters that gripped the country were on a scale that is difficult for one to comprehend. Amid the amazing stories of courage and sacrifice in the days following the earthquake, there is a sober realization that things will be different–certainly for a while, but perhaps, profoundly, in the long-term. However, Japan will indeed recover, and we can all support this process through donations to charity organizations during this most critical of periods, but also in the future by supporting Japanese business and cultural exports abroad.
