Legendary Entertainment and The Pokémon Company have form a partnership to produce a live action Pokémon film.
An announcement was made on July 21 that Legendary Entertainment had acquired the rights to live action films based on the Pokémon franchise. The company beat bids from Warner Bros. and Sony.
TOHO will distribute the film in Japan, while Universal Pictures will distribute it abroad.
The first live action Pokémon film will be centered on Detective Pikachu, a character introduced in the Nintendo 3DS game “Meitantei Pikachu” released in February of 2016. Production of the film is set to begin in 2017.
Interest in the Pokémon franchise has been reinvigorated by the release of the mobile app Pokémon Go.
