49-year old Seiji Uchida, who was paralyzed in a car accident 28 years ago, will finally be able to take a vacation to France…thanks to the work of the hi-tech wizardry of some of Japan’s leading robot developers.

Uchida has had a lifelong dream of visiting the French World Heritage site of Mont Sainte-Michel, and this robotic suit will finally allow him to achieve that dream.

But it won’t be as simple as strapping on the suit and magically being able to walk – Uchida’s caretaker will wear the futuristic suit, allowing him to carry Uchida up the hill. As Inhabitat’s article details:

The battery-powered HAL allows the wearer to carry weights of up to 80 kilograms. It does this by detecting the wearer’s muscle impulses and then supporting the his or her body movements.

Of course, this story would be even better if the suit somehow allowed Uchida to walk around himself, but we aren’t quite close enough to that technology…yet.
