Tokyo held its annual pride festival from June 6th to June 7th 2026 and an attendance of about 270,000 people. The theme this year was “A Future Opened Up by Diversity and Equality.” Many Japanese citizens in the LGBTQ+ community joined together to not only celebrate, but also to share information and discuss the ongoing advocacy for human rights.
The main events held at Tokyo Pride were the Pride Parade, Pride Festival, Pride Night, and an accompanying Queer Art Exhibition that will run from June 4th through June 28th. There was also a youth pride event on June 13th and 14th, and a Human Rights Conference on June 20th.
Tokyo’s Pride Festival, held at the Yoyogi Park Event Plaza, lasted for two days and was filled with booths and performances. Visitors spent time interacting with booths such as Tokyo Pride Lounge, where people could “share their heart” and write out their experiences and feelings on papers shaped like hearts, and Youth Project, an exhibition that gave a platform for young LGBTQ+ people to express themselves. JAPAN PRIDE NETWORK also hosted a space where different pride groups from all over the country connected visitors through different activities.
The Pride Stage hosted the largest volume of performances than ever before with 17 groups and over 150 individual performers. Aoyama Thelma and Durian Lollobrigida opened the performances on the first day by talking about diversity and equality, followed by a drag show by 11 drag queens from iGFiNity. Other artists featured were YENO, the Barazoku theater company, Chun, Macoto (RHT.), SIRUP, AI, and lastly another drag show closed the performances on the first day with Rachel D’Amour, Nikuyo Nikunokoji, Bibi Gerold, and Bouillabaisse.
The second day of performers consisted of Satsuki Nishihara, Jasmine High, Kaya, AYA SATO, and Happo Fubijin. The last performance of the festival included 80 people and was produced by Junko Edamame. The performance included a mix of drag queens and dancers who created a beautiful display of colors representing the progress pride flag.
The pride parade also took place on the second day and featured around 15,000 people and 60 different groups. They marched from Shibuya to Harajuku to raise awareness of legalization of same-sex marriage, transgender rights, voices of the youth of the next generation, and pride activities across the country.
At the end of the festival, Marriage For All Japan, a pro-marriage equality organization, had 50 queer couples hold up a message that said “Love Wins”, sending out a message for marriage equality.
