VAMPS’ big summer event “VAMPS LIVE BEAST PARTY” was held on August 22 at Makuhari, Chiba. This year, the band collaborated with Niku Fest, a popular food festival in Japan, allowing fans to enjoy the event from early in the day.
The concert started at 5:30, with HYDE (vocal) and K.A.Z (guitar) appearing on a car-shaped mikoshi. The great variety of ways for band members to appear is a highlight of BEAST PARTY.
Once all the members took the stage, K.A.Z thrummed the guitar. It was the intro to “I GOTTA KICK START NOW.” Fans screamed loudly, showing great excitement.
The second song “AHEAD” ended, and HYDE shouted “Welcome to BEAST PARTY!” With the energy continuing to run, “HUNTING” began. HYDE looked around the venue as he yelled, “I want to eat meat! Where’s my lamb?!”
“ANGEL TRIP” followed right after, and fans took out their towels to spin during the chorus part. The sense of unity among 20,000 fans was astonishing. HYDE spoke “The party has just started, but…” and continued to the final chorus.
An intro similar to club music surrounded the atmosphere, changing the venue into a dance floor. Under disco-styled lights, the band began “TROUBLE.” The up-tempo, happy tune was accompanied by bubbles floating over the audience.
The 6th song was “COSMOS,” a popular number from the band’s first album. The setting sun in the background created a mysterious feeling, different from usual.
After the VAMPS classic “LOVE ADDICT” was HYDE’s solo number “HELLO.” The fans became one to sing along during the chorus. K.A.Z’s high-pitched guitar sounds perfectly matched the exhilaration of the beach.
Following was a powerful drum solo by Arimatsu (drums), playing along a mashup of Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” OBLIVION DUST’s “YOU,” and VAMPS’ “LOVE ADDICT.”
HYDE reappeared on stage wearing a yukata. He repeated, “I trust you guys!” as he rode onto a rubber boat to drift over the wave of fans to reach the center stage.
The BEAST PARTY standard “acoustic time” began with a cover of JITTERIN’ JINN’s “Natsumatsuri,” a song that JIN (keyboards) was a part of in the production process.
The rest of the members appeared on the center stage to perform HYDE’s 2001 solo number “evergreen.” The atmosphere distinct to acoustic performances created a relaxing mood, with the distant waves adding to the effect.
Each member talked about their summertime memories. Ju-ken (bass), a local of the Makuhari area, brought laughter to the crowd talking about his high school experiences in the area. JIN mentioned his interests in 8mm film and techno-styled bands back in the day, while Arimatsu spoke of his recent accomplishment of climbing Mt. Fuji. K.A.Z spent his summer vacations swimming in the river and catching bugs. Fans intently listened as HYDE told a story of traveling from Wakayama to Nagano by motorcycle when he was 18 years old.
After the talk session, acoustic versions of “THE JOLLY ROGER” and “MY FIRST LAST” followed. JIN’s mellow keyboard sounds gently surrounded the venue.
The members moved back to the front stage with an arrangement of “BITE” playing in the background. The first number back at the main stage was “ZERO,” a track that suits the nighttime atmosphere.
After hard rock numbers “DEVIL SIDE” and “EVIL” were “THE PAST” and “GET AWAY” which presented Ju-ken’s lowest bass notes. The 18th song “MEMORIES” was followed by another short drum feature by Arimatsu.
As the intro to “LIVE WIRE” began, special guest Kiyoharu took the stage. It was a collaboration last seen in February’s VAMPARK FEST. Kiyoharu mentioned to HYDE, “I’ll come whenever if you invite me.” With that, the fans let out a great applause. The show hit maximum voltage as the band and Kiyoharu played “SANDY,” a number by Kiyoharu’s band Sads.
The 21-song set ended with “SEX BLOOD ROCK N’ ROLL” and the first night came to a close with an array of fireworks.
