Figure skating competition started off at PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter a bit early before the opening ceremony on February 9th. Once a Japanese pair, Miu Suzaki and Ryuichi Kihara’s performance began, anime fans all over the world got hit by a big surprise. Yes, this is because they skated to a song from Yuri!!! on ICE.

Yuri!!! on ICE is a popular figure skating anime which aired on TV in 2016, and this series attracted not only anime fans, but also the actual professional figure skaters. For example, Evgeniia Medvedeva from Russia and Johnny Weir from America have stated that they love this series. Johnny has posted a video of him dancing to “Agape” that one of the main characters, Yuri Plisetsky performed in the series.

Especially this self-titled song, Yuri!!! on ICE was the song that a main character, Yuri Katsuki used for his free skating, and it was played numerous times. If you watched this series, you can’t help but remember the famous scenes.

A duo has been using this song for their short program starting this season. They have performed this piece a few times last year, howevermany people were so moved by their performance at the Winter Olympics.

This pair set their personal record getting a score, 57.42.
