The annual idol showcase event, Idol Summer Escape, was held at Anime Expo 2026 to massive success. The audience was filled with idol fans waving penlights and cheering for every act.
The show started with the host, Sasara Sekine, an idol, actress, model, and emcee based in Tokyo, who served as both the host and a performer. She performed a mixture of covers and songs from the idol group Houkago Princess, which she graduated from in 2022.
YURAPICO, the most passionate idol in the world, performed next. She has performed in all 47 Japanese prefectures and 9 countries worldwide. Her performance was extremely high energy as she sang her original music. She threw a pool floatie and an inflatable alien into the audience to bounce around, adding to the energy. Her last song was “YURAPICO Symphony,” and she had the other idols join her on stage for the symphony.
The next performer was himi♡chuu, a West Coast-based idol group with four members. They debuted new outfits at the welcome ceremony on the first day of the convention and wore them during their performance at Idol Summer Escape as well. They performed their unreleased original song and a couple of covers. At the end of their set, they debuted a brand-new original song they had been working on with a Japanese producer.
ASAYORU Maid Cafe’s idol group, Moe↗Age!, were the second-to-last performers. ASAYORU Maid Cafe is a permanent maid cafe located in Los Angeles. They performed covers of idol music full of fun call-and-responses that had the audience members sending all of their energy to the performers. Their last song was their new original song, “Comet,” which is available on all major streaming platforms.
yu&me, Dreamland Maid Cafe’s own idol group, filled in for You’ll Melt More!, a Japanese group that had been announced but had visa issues. The group features four members from Dreamland’s own cafe. The group is less than a year old, but they put on a wonderful performance and captivated the audience with not only their fun cover songs but also their self-produced original song. Look forward to seeing it on streaming platforms soon!
Idol Summer Escape was a celebration of idol culture that brought together idols and fans from both Japan and SoCal. From energetic covers to original songs and new debuts, each performer brought something unique to the stage. We can’t wait to return to Idol Summer Escape at Anime Expo 2027!
