A weekly American entertainment trade magazine, Variety selected a Japanese animator, Makoto Shinkai as one of “10 Animators to Watch in 2016.” This list is filled with American big name animators such as Fletcher Moules (“Ghostbusters”) and Adrian Molina (“COCO” by Disney/Pixar) and Shinkai is the first Japanese animator to be honored in the two-year history. This year’s Creative Impact in Animation award went to Jennifer Yuh Nelson who directed “Kung Fu Panda 3” and also the first female animator for this award.

Shinkai made a statement to show his deep appreciation for being selected by Variety Magazine and said that he’s really happy for this honor and he would like to continue to strive to create works that he can be proud of for the world with his crew.

Shinkai debuted with “Voices of a Distant Star” made solely by him back in 2002. Since then his work have been recognized not only in Japan but also all over the world with “5 Centimeters Per Second” (2007), “Garden of Words” (2013) and so on.

A new anime film, “Your Name” directed by Shinkai is coming out this summer in Japan.
