Japan won its first medals in the 2010 Winter Olympics on Monday in the men’s 500m speed-skating competition. Two athletes took home silver and bronze medals in the 500m competition.

As reported by the LA Examiner, Japan’s Keiichiro Nagashima took Silver with a two race combined time of 69.98 seconds, just +.16 seconds slower than gold medal winner Tae-Bum Mo of South Korea.

Nagashima commented to TV reporters, “Of course I wanted the gold, but I’m extremely happy to have taken a medal.”

Needless to say, that’s a good start for the country in the Vancouver Olympics. Hopefully more Japanese athletes take home some medals (and maybe even some gold ones) by the time it’s all over.
