On December 1, SILENT SIREN, a 4-piece all-girl band consisting of Su (Sumire Yoshida on vocals and guitar), Hinachu (Hinako Umemura on drums), Ainyan (Aina Yamauchi on bass), and Yukarun (Yukako Kurosaka on keyboards), performed at Musicians Concert Hall in Los Angeles; the penultimate performance for The New World Tour 2017. Attending the event, I was unfamiliar with SILENT SIREN’s music, only aware of their success in their native country, with twelve of their singles ranked in the Top Ten in Japanese Music charts. A large gathering of people lined outside by the Institute’s entrance, all eager for the show. The venue was spacious, and a vendor sold various SILENT SIREN merchandise, such as pink shirts, towels, wristbands, and handheld fans, all with the band’s name on them. A plethora of fans started to crowd the venue as the program was nearing to start.

When the show initiated, lights went out, followed by cheering from the audience. From the moment they came out to the stage, SILENT SIREN played their first song, “Fujiyama Disco,” the fantastic guitar and bass strumming from the opening that immediately kept me engaged! All wore white attire with golden streaks of string and white boots. A memorable moment is during the performance of “BANG! BANG! BANG!” in which each member was put on the spot and performed a solo corresponding to her instrument.

Influenced by the band’s energy and encouragement, the audience sang and gesticulated to the music’s rhythm. One instance is during the playing of “Shindobaddo” in which the audience held onto each other’s shoulders, swaying back and forth like waves while mellowing “Woo-oh-oh-oh.”

There were several MC’s throughout the show, one of which SILENT SIREN opened the floor to the fans’ questions. One fan requested to Su (the guitarist) if he could play her guitar. “Of course,” she replied. He played the guitar, Su and the audience thrilled by a melody he strummed. When asked what the fondest memory they have of working with each other, they recounted a time when they visited Universal Studios Hollywood, and got soaking wet after the Jurassic Park ride.  Following that, another question addressed was if there is a possibility for a ten-year anniversary tour for SILENT SIREN.  They responded that because they performed for Nippon Budokan, the legendary hall for singers in Japan, a ten year anniversary tour is not out of the question.

Towards the very end, when SILENT SIREN left stage briefly, the audience chanted for an encore. Returning, they wore pink shirts with the band’s name written on them. They performed their final two songs, “KAKUMEI” and “Besan,” and took a picture with the audience, thanking them for supporting and coming to the show.

In conclusion, SILENT SIREN’s performance was an unforgettable experience, and I am eager for what the future holds for them and to hear more of their work.
