I just read an article about the Japanese rock group TsuShiMaMiRe. The band, an all-girl group from Chiba, Japan, play an energetic and quirky blend of punk, rock, pop and whatever else they decide to do.
This article from All Media NY does a pretty decent job introducing the band in terms of a recent gig, offering up this quick blurb to give beginners an idea of what the band is about:
Their strawberry-skull logo is perfectly fitting—cute but hardcore. While some would try to compare them to the 5.6.7.8’s, made famous in Kill Bill, TSMMR’s talent and ability to rock go far beyond what America is familiar with, at least in terms of Japanese imports. They can shift from light reggae and ska riffs to hardcore punk in the middle of a song totally seamlessly and still have it make perfect sense—just check out their song “Tea Time Ska” for a great example.
Apparently, TsuShiMaMiRe rose in popularity in the recent years due to spots at Austin, Texas’s South By Southwest music festival, and according to the article the band is preparing an American album release sometime in 2011 hopefully.
Personally, I’m intrigued by TsuShiMaMiRe due to the fact that their music is somewhat tongue-in-cheek. As the article states, they have a song called “J-Pop”, in which they poke fun at the genre. I like self-aware music like that, and if I spoke Japanese I’d probably appreciate their tunes even more.
