Hatsune Miku Expo 2014 L.A. Concert

Updated with better pictures. Taken by Jason. Everyone thank Jason.
Second update with setlist put together by DKLA (in the comments below). What a swell person!

Last night was the first show of the Hatsune Miku weekend concert event (October 11th and 12th) and for my first live Vocaloid concert it was an experience to behold.

Let me preface this article by stating that I don’t really listen to any Vocaloid songs. Most of the songs I know come from the first PSP game and that has been the only Project Diva game I’ve played but despite not knowing ANY song in the setlist (besides Kokoro) the entire concert was loads of fun.

First off, the projection of Miku and all the other Vocaloids was a sight to behold. Miku and friends all looked amazingly lifelike and they each had actual depth to theme (projected depth but that doesn’t make it any less impressive). There were however some hiccups with the projection technology as you can see through the virtual cast from certain angles but most people would be too busy enjoying the energy of the crowd to notice things like that.

The crowd was another sight in of itself. I have three words for you: synchronized, glowstick, waving. The Nokia theatre was filled with a sea of waving lights from loving fans that were all waving to the beat of the songs. As a relative outsider to the series and anything Miku, I was slightly jealous of this shared experience between all the fans.

The comparison to an “actual” concert has been made far too often and questions like “How do you cheer for someone that’s not actually there?” always come up when talking about a Hatsune Miku concert. Well the fans will sure show you how little they care about all that; everyone is there to have fun and cheer for something they all collectively enjoy.

As you can see, things got too wild for the camera to handle.

As for the songs, my personal favorite was Hold Release Rakshasa and Corpses. It’s a comparatively darker song than most Miku songs in composition and in the lyrics it really stood out to me in the lineup of the concert. I may not know the whole lineup of the concert but World is Mine, Kokoro, and Secret Police are songs I do know and they were definitely sung during the concert. Trust me; I was there (even if I don’t know half the songs.)

There’s still another concert happening today so for those of you still on the fence of whether or not to go, I would implore you to go; it’s a ridiculous amount of fun. I’m only sad that Luka showed up for a whole TWO SONGS. Highway robbery.

Here’s that setlist guys (Again this was put together by DKLA):

Sorry, but I don’t listen to Miku’s ballads often.

  3. DKLA, thank you for the setlist!! I’ve been looking for one. Hopefully a few more knowledgeable people can help fill in the holes =)

  4. Oh, and one small piece of data to contribute: I actually didn’t notice this myself, but a friend told me that Just Be Friends was actually an English version.

  5. The ballad song after Kaito was Parades, and the last song for the encore was Starduster! JBF was indeed in English.
Would you mind if I use the photos in my posts, with an external link to this page? Thank you.

  7. I hope that the set list for the NYC concert is completely different from the LA concert. Also that’s completely unfair that Luka only get 2 songs at least half of the attendance love luka must be disappointed. I just hope that won’t happen on Friday and Saturday.

  8. The setlists for Day 1 and Day 2 were slightly different from each other. So that list is not universal. for the entire event.

  9. From what I have gathered, they might change up to 5 songs (mostly Miku) based on the last concert in Jakarta. Realistically, it has been 5 months since they did that concert in May and will only change 1 or 2 songs (if at all) since it has been barely a week between the LA and NYC shows.

  10. Glass Wall was one of my favorites because it was very unique to the shows I’ve seen online and in person at Mikunopolis. The stage visuals helped a lot.
