In the realm of weapon craftsmanship, TAKUMIARMORY stands as a beacon of creativity and ingenuity. With their exceptional ability to bring forth the awe-inspiring beauty of Japanese craftsmanship, TAKUMIARMORY has garnered international recognition, captivating not only domestic audiences but also enthusiasts around the world. In this exclusive interview, we delve into the world of TAKUMIARMORY, exploring their remarkable creations, their ambitions, and the impact of their work amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  1. Please tell me about the company “Takumi Kogei.”

Takumi Kougei is a manufacturing company in Japan that was founded in 2008. We specialize in plastic processing, sign making, and stage art production. Since 2015, we have also launched an original sculpting brand called TAKUMIARMORY. Under this brand, we design, produce, and sell original weapons that appear in fantasy worlds such as video games, anime, and manga.

  1. How is TAKUMIARMORY different from Takumi Kougei?

Takumi Kougei primarily focuses on industrial plastic processing and designing, producing, and installing items like shop signs. It can be described as a “local factory” that specializes in these types of jobs.
On the other hand, TAKUMIARMORY is a brand that creates weapons and environments that do not exist in the real world.
The work of a local factory belongs to Takumi Kougei, while the realm of fantasy belongs to TAKUMIARMORY. This division makes it easier to distinguish between the two.

  1. Although Takumi Kougei itself is a company that specializes in plastic processing, what was the motivation behind starting a cosplay weapon store?

During the first three years since its establishment, Takumi Kougei mainly focused on typical jobs related to industrial plastic processing and sign making. The company worked tirelessly to repay the debt incurred during its founding. However, this hectic lifestyle took a toll on the mental well-being of the company’s president, Mr. Orii. He started questioning himself, wondering if he had entered the manufacturing industry solely to repay his debt.

Realizing that he had a different purpose in mind, Mr. Orii decided to reaffirm his commitment to craftsmanship. He recalled the excitement he felt when creating weapons inspired by video games and anime that had greatly influenced him. Although he used to make them out of cardboard during his childhood, he believed that he could now create remarkably high-quality weapons. Despite not receiving any orders at the time, he began producing these weapons, driven by his newfound determination.

During the period of creating these weapons, Mr. Orii was able to regain a sense of fulfillment and excitement through his craftsmanship, and his mental condition gradually improved. However, for about six years since he started making them, the weapons did not really generate any sales.

  1. What kind of weapons have you created so far? And which one would you say is the craziest?

We have primarily created original weapon sculptures under TAKUMIARMORY, ranging from small swords of about 50 cm to large axes over 2 meters long. Among them, the axe over 2 meters long stands out as the most popular piece, despite not receiving any orders. It was a long-term project that took 2 weeks for the design and 3 months for production. As a result, we were able to achieve a texture that resembled metal through plastic processing. This axe always garners the most attention at the exhibition.

Recently, our original sculpting quality has been highly praised in various fields, and we have also worked on numerous licensed products. One notable masterpiece among the licensed sculptures we have been involved in is these three pieces from the anime “NieR:Automata Ver1.1a“: “Virtuous Treaty,” ” Virtuous Contract,” and “Pod 042.” They were exhibited at Anime Japan 2023, which took place in Japan in March of this year, and received a tremendous response.

  1. What kind of work do you want to create in the future?

I want to create sculptures based on anime, video games, and manga that seem impossible to materialize in this world. I also hope to become a weapon store where many people say, “This can only be made by Takumi Kougei!” I have a vision of expanding not only weapons but also costumes and other sculptures in that direction.

  1. Since 2020, not only have anime and cosplay events been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is likely that there were various impacts on Takumi Kougei’s plastic manufacturing as well. How did you overcome the pandemic?

During the pandemic, I truly thought we might go bankrupt. There were nights when we, the president and vice president discussed, “What should we do about the employees’ salaries next month?” However, in Japan, a product called ” Acrylic Sneeze Guards” emerged. As a company specializing in plastic processing, we excelled at producing this product, and the demand for the guards skyrocketed. In 2020 and 2021, we mainly focused on producing these guards.

Despite the challenging circumstances, we wanted to maintain a playful spirit. So, we also introduced interesting acrylic guard series such as ones with manga lines, magic circles, and RPG-themed designs. Thanks to the attention we received from online, we were able to survive to this day. However, the demand for acrylic guards has decreased, and from 2022 to the present, we are facing another difficult period.

  1. Have you expanded into overseas markets, not only in the United States but also in Europe and other regions? Do you have any specific reasons or goals for actively venturing into foreign markets?

I believe that Japanese craftsmanship has an exceptional ability to convey intricacy, excitement, and a sense of “wow” factor. We see it as our role to communicate and promote the excellence of Japanese craftsmanship. We have a strong advantage in showcasing Japanese craftsmanship in a familiar way that appeals to people of all ages, from adults to children. It would be a waste for us to limit our promotion to just within Japan. With a strong desire to share the greatness of Japanese craftsmanship with the world, we actively expand our presence overseas.

  1. With travel restrictions to Japan being lifted, there are now many foreign tourists visiting the country! Is there a place in Japan where people can purchase or experience products from TAKUMIARMORY?

Currently, we have a TAKUMIARMORY pop-up store at MAGNET by SHIBUYA109, a commercial facility in Shibuya, Tokyo. The store is open from June 16th to August 27th. During this period, there will be promotional videos playing on the Forum Vision located at the Shibuya Scramble Crossing, and there will also be a booth where customers who make a certain purchase can enjoy photo opportunities. After the closure of this pop-up store, we have plans to expand with pop-up stores in various locations throughout Japan.

  1. Can we purchase TAKUMIARMORY merchandise in the United States?

During this Anime Expo 2023, you can purchase some of our products at the JUNGLE booth #2621. Our Vice President, Suzu, will be cosplaying at the booth, so please come and visit us.

  1. What is the goal of TAKUMIARMORY and craftsmen products?

The President’s goal is to create an amusement park. In fact, starting from June, a monster battle attraction has opened on the premises of our company. This is an interactive attraction where you can battle monsters with TAKUMIARMORY weapons. The plan is to expand this attraction and create a real RPG-themed park with multiple dungeons, including mini-bosses, mid-bosses, and final bosses. The park will have inns, item shops, and of course, weapon shops. Visitors will be able to earn money, upgrade their equipment, and challenge enemies, allowing them to experience the world of RPGs in a real-life setting. Creating this one-of-a-kind theme park that allows people to personally experience the RPG world is the goal of TAKUMIARMORY and craftsmen products.
