Well, he was still old, but not the age officials thought he was. According to this story from BBC, Sogen Kato, believed to be a remarkable 111 years old, actually died approximately 30 years ago. How did they find this out? Well, welfare officials interested in visiting him and seeing how he was doing were repeatedly shushed away by his family.
Authorities grew suspicious and sought an investigation by police, who forced their way into the house on Wednesday.They discovered a mummified body, believed to be Kato, lying in his bed, wearing underwear and pyjamas, covered with a blanket.
His relatives told the confused and horrified officials that he locked himself in his room 30 years ago to be a “Living Buddha”. I don’t know if I believe that.
Interestingly, Kato’s family had been receiving and using his widower’s pension payments since his wife died 6 years ago. Sounds like the family was keeping Kato’s passing a secret in order to use his money…
